How are fire stations in the Avon area crewed?
Our fire stations are crewed in one of two
ways:
In the areas of Bristol, Bath and Weston-super-Mare the fire
stations are continuously crewed by firefighters on the
Wholetime Duty System who work a shift system of four
watches - Red, Blue, White and Green.
In January 2009 Yate Fire Station will changed from Day
Crewing to the Wholetime Duty System. Over the
next few years an extra 30,000 new homes are expected to be
developed in the South Gloucestershire area, many of these in Yate
and the surrounding area. Cover is being increased in order to
ensure greater protection for the communities living in these
areas. You can
find more information about expanded cover at Yate Fire
Station in the Press Release
In more rural areas the fire stations are crewed by
firefighters on the Retained Duty
System. These firefighters have other jobs, but when
they are alerted by Service Control, they stop whatever they
are doing and go to their local fire station ready to respond to
the fire or other incident. These firefighters work alongside those
on Wholetime Duty System.
